The Turkmen State Medical Institute was established in 1932. On August 27, 2010 by the Decree of the President of Turkmenistan the Institute was transformed into the State Medical University of Turkmenistan.

The State Medical University of Turkmenistan is the only higher educational institution in Independent and Neutral Turkmenistan, where highly qualified specialists are trained in all areas of medicine for the healthcare system and medical industry of the country.

At present time the students are studied at the new study complex corresponding of world standards and are destined for study of three thousands of students simultaneously, which was leased in exploitation and solemnly opened at the first of September in 2010 in the “Day of knowledge and student youth” with the participation of Esteemed President of Turkmenistan GurbangulyBerdimuhamedov. At this new study complex are created all necessary conditions for teaching students, conducting research and promoting healthy lifestyles among young people.


With the creation of the university, new faculties, specialties and clinical facilities were opened in it: the Faculty of Sports Medicine and the Scientific and Clinical Center of Eye Diseases (2011), the facultyof Military Medicine and Department of Postgraduate Training and Improvement of Doctors (2012), Dental Training and Production Center (2013), specialty “Rehabilitation and non-traditional medicine” in the medical faculty (2014), specialty "Sanitary-epidemiological business" as part of the Military Facultyand the Educational - Scientific Center of Mother and Child Health Care(2015), specialty "Medical and Social Protection" in the medical  faculty  (2018).

Currently, the structure of the University includes 8 faculties and 53 departments, the Scientific and Clinical Center of Eye Diseases, the Dental Training and Production Center, the Educational - Scientific Center of Mother and Child Health Care, the Scientific Research Center, the Centers for Medical Biotechnology, sports medicine, information and computing center, student's sports club, electronic library, educational, teaching and methodical departments and the department of postgraduate training and improvement of doctors.

Taking into account the fact that the training of students meets the world requirements in 2011 by the international organization "European Business Assembly", the university received an international award "European quality".

The University actively participates in the implementation of the concept of continuing vocational education, providing training and retraining of personnel at the faculty of postgraduate training and improvement of doctors. According to the programs of higher and additional professional education, the University annually trains about 2,500 doctors.

Clinical bases

Training of medical personnel is conducted at the University on clinical bases of various profiles and in the medical centers that are part of the University:

Scientific and Clinical Center of Eye Diseases;

Dental Training and Production Center;

Educational - Scientific Center of Mother and Child Health Care.


International activity

At the present time between medical University and leading high educational institutions, scientific-clinical centers of foreign countries are improved close two-sided mutual collaboration. Including signed cooperation agreements with the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine and the Belarusian State Medical University.


Scientific work

The main directions of scientific research at the State Medical University of Turkmenistan are:

• Improvement of methods for diagnosis, treatment and prevention of various diseases in the hot and dry climate of Turkmenistan;

• Prevention of non-infectious diseases, identification of the effect of cardiovascular diseases on other organs of the body;

• Comprehensive study of medicinal plants in Turkmenistan;

• Scientific substantiation of medicinal properties of therapeutic mud and mineral waters of sanatoria of Turkmenistan;

• Improve the effectiveness of treatment of children's and gynecological diseases;

• Combating especially dangerous infectious diseases and their eradication;

• Studying the heritage of the most ancient Turkmen healers, such as Abu Ali IbnSina (Avicenna), Seyit Ismail Gurgenli, MuhammetGaymaz Turkmen and other scientists.


The results of scientific works are published in scientific journals published in the country and abroad, are presented at scientific conferences, including international ones. Young scientists and students of the university participate in various scientific competitions, including in the competition of scientific works, held by the Youth Organization of Turkmenistan named after Magtymguly taking prizes every year.
